Duration: 1.5 day
Boat: Freedom (22nd Street Landing)
Conditions: Perfect weather, calm seas
Bait: Medium Sardines
Location: Cortez Bank
Went out on the Freedom for one last hoorah before the season “ends.”
At our first stop, we got into a nice bite of smaller yellowtail.
The second stop brought loads of giant bonito! We landed several that were 12 – 15 lbs.! Along with the bonito were some yellowtail and calico bass mixed in.
To finish the day, we did a few drifts over some structure to capture bottom critters. The water was 300’ and everyone was hooking something on every drop. Giant reds, good lings, slug sheephead, what seemed like 500 salmon grouper, flag rockfish, and more salmon grouper!
I captured a nice ling that came in at 10lbs. My main setup for bottom fishing was: Talica 12 II + Terez 8’ MH + 65# PowerPro + Flat-fall 250g in Phantom Squid.
I tried the Lucanus setup: Trinidad 16NA + Tescata M + 100g-250g Lucanus jigs in various colors and achieved mixed results. I haven’t yet figured out the formula for consistent fish with Lucanus.
For the yellowtail, I used Tranx 500HG + Terez 8’ H + 65# PowerPro + 25’ 50# Fluoro leader + Coltsniper 80g in Blue Sardine.
I ended up with 27 fish and took home 5 for eating (the rest were released or given to other passengers.)
All-in-all, it was an absolutely fantastic trip and I can’t give enough praise to everyone involved in running the Freedom.
