Fishing Report: 9/18/15
Went on an overnight aboard the Freedom.
Headed to Santa Barbara Island where the bluefin tuna bite was going off for the past week. Cpt. Jeff said it had slowed a bit but we’d try it again. The tuna fishing was slow, but Jeff had a plan B, which was to go near the island and pull on yellowtail.
I got 3 right away on the 250g Flat Fall in Blue Sardine (on the fast retrieve, not on the fall), and then I lost the jig in the kelp.
I switched to a dropper loop and got this yellow (attached), which happens to be a personal best. I know it’s not a “slug,” but I generally catch yellows, just not big ones…working on it!
Setup: Talica 8II + Terez MH + 65# PowerPro + 30# wind-on leader + reverse dropper loop + 12 oz. sinker (strong current) + 1/0 + San Diego jam knot + circle hook (nose hook).
- Low gear is awesome.
- My line-to-line connection is good, if anything broke, it was the connection to the terminal tackle (San Diego jam knot, or Trilene knot)–I only got broken off when I hooked kelp or the bottom and we had to tighten the drag to pull hard on the snag.
- I need to learn the best way to use a rubber-core sinker (I tried to get my bait down, away from the birds, but never got hooked).
- I’ll probably never nose-hook a bait again (save for dropper loop), the butt/belly hooking allows me to stay in much better contact with my bait.
